Being a diver and a hurdler is an extremely rare combination for a high school athlete, but it's one that works well for Washburn Rural senior Marquel Russell.
Russell was a two-time city champion in one-meter diving and placed 13th in the Class 6A state meet for the Junior Blues' swimming and diving team this winter.

And as soon as that season ended in February, Russell turned his attention to track and field, where the Rural standout is a former 6A runner-up in the 110-meter high hurdles.
About the only thing that diving and hurdling have in common is that both disciplines are hard to master and it takes a bit of a daredevil to even try, which Russell said fits his personality perfectly.
"I've been a daredevil since I was a little kid,'' Russell said Thursday during the Jerry Beardslee Invitational track and field meet at Hummer Sports Park.

After five seasons as Seaman's head football coach, Glenn O'Neil is leaving the school to become the head coach at Dodge City High School
Dodge City announced in a press release Thursday afternoon that O’Neil has accepted the Red Demons' coaching position pending board of education approval at the board's next meeting.
“Our leadership team identified key character traits we desired in the candidate selected for this important position,'' Dodge City athletic director Jay Gifford said in the Dodge City release. "(O'Neil's) vision for the program, our student-athletes, and as a member of the head coaching staff is very similar to many of the other successful individuals in the department. It is obvious how successful Coach O’Neil has been on the field (and court), but we were most impressed with the relationships he continues to have with his current and former players and coaches.

Hayden's girls soccer team had the same game plan for both the first and second half of Wednesday's home match against Lansing.
The Wildcats just did a better job with that plan in the second half, turning a nailbiter into an 8-0 rout.
Hayden, which improved to 3-2 on the season, led 1-0 at the half on a goal from freshman Elaina Wolf, but scored three times in the first 10:42 of the second half to break the game open.
"The emphasis the second half was the same things we emphasized the first half,'' Hayden coach Klaus Kreutzer said. "I just think the focus was better the second half. The focus was better both offensively and defensively and when you play good defense you create chances.''

Topeka High's baseball team faces a tough challenge to become a contender in the Centennial League, which has produced multiple state championship teams.
But Cody Miller's team got the 2021 season off to a good start on Monday at Hummer Sports Park. In fact, it was a perfect start for the Trojans, with three Topeka High pitchers combining for a three-inning perfect game in the Trojans' 15-0 non-league win over Kansas City-Washington.
Senior Lukas Brennan was the starting pitcher for Topeka, followed by junior Dillon Mitchell and junior Max Colombo, with Brennan and Mitchell both striking out three hitters and Colombo two.

Washburn Rural's softball team had a lot of new faces in its opening day lineup Tuesday at Hayden, but the result was what the Junior Blues have grown accustomed to, with Rural rolling to a 11-1, 12-1 sweep over their Centennial League rivals.
The Junior Blues broke open a close first game with an eight-run fifth inning and took command of the nightcap with a five-run first.
Washburn Rural had 21 hits on the day (11 in the opener), including six extra-base hits and a pair of home runs.
Senior Olivia Bruno and sophomore Emmerson Cope starred at the plate and on the pitching mound for the Junior Blues.
Bruno, a Kansas signee, twirled a two-hitter in the opener and went 4 for 4 with a home run, a double and a single.
